I enjoy reading The Society of Wood Engravers monthly email newsletter, it always has some interesting event of note, and this month is no exception (I'm a subscriber to the Society by the way).
Howard Phipps is a Wood Engraver whose work I admire (and who is an elected member of The Society of Wood Engravers). The Society's newsletter this month reminds us that the 8th Dec 2019 edition of Countryfile on BBC1 was based in Wiltshire, and had a good section filming Howard Phipps wood engraving.
The section starts with Howard watercolour painting a landscape prior which he hopes to later engrave, then moves to his studio where he introduces the tools and techniques, then to his printing press.
The presenter asks some good questions, and he amused by the names of the tools - the Spitsticker in particular. When told Howard's press is from 1865(?) the interviewer says jokingly 'isn't it time for an upgrade then', but of course we know that it works just fine. He also asks why Howard doesn't just take a photo of the landscape he is working up into a watercolour, and Howard gives some good answers, including that he can alter the landscape to suit his picture, such as moving a tree to a better position.
Whilst unrelated, as my mothers side of the family were mainly farmers, it was hard to watch another article in the programme about the floods in Wiltshire, seeing a large arable farm completely flooded.
It is good to see Wood Engraving making it to a popular national TV programme & channel, and it was worth watching, especially as it includes some lovely English Landscapes & Treescape wood engravings by Howard Phipps.
