About Me

Based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire (UK), married with 2 junior aged children. Strong interest in wood & tool sharpening/maintenance, & a later interest in Wood & Printmaking (esp Wood Engraving); made contemporary wooden clock cases in past.

Born 1973 in Leicestershire (UK), went to Loughborough Grammar School, then off to University of Hertfordshire, with a year working for Oxford Instruments, based in Oxford, working on their particle accelerators.

Spent a some years working long hours in business, but the conditions that I have had for most of my life meant some changes, I now do some part time work and offer services to other printmakers/artists.

For 30 years had rare continuing health conditions, by product is Gastroparesis (I can't digest food like other people which requires restrictive diet and eating every 2-3 hours).

Chairman of Amersham Art Group.

Related to William Hair Haseler, early 20 Century silver smith who worked with Arthur Lasenby Liberty (from Chesham) who founded the famous Liberty & Co shop in London, read blog entry.

Coronavirus Pandemic

Aged 46, I read in emails from the private school I attended of feats fellow pupils are achieving during this pandemic - consultant surgeons and the like - who are making heroic efforts during this pandemic.

For 30 years I've had rare health conditions and my life has turned out differently. My biggest contribution to this pandemic seems to be in doing nothing - other than staying isolated at home with the rest of my family, so I don't contribute to overwhelming the NHS, partly because I have some rare health conditions. At home, we're busy, home educating our 7 & 9 year old children, cooking (a lot, some with my son), work on growing vegetables (one condition I have is Gastroparesis, this is necessary), working on this blog, and when I have time, doing some wood engravings.

I also took part in a COVID-19 Research Study.

Wood & Printmaking

I have many years working in wood, using just hand tools (I don't own machines or use them) and use this in printmaking - particularly exploring Wood Engraving, using end grain blocks that I make myself and tools that I sharpen to a high degree of sharpness. I have built my own printing press, out of wood, which operates silently. I have experience in taking logs from trees, hand splitting them into quarters using traditional techniques, and air drying them.

I am interested in the Arts & Crafts Movement, and it's furniture, and in using hand tools only, and the craftsman skills that some writers such as LTC Rolt refer to (as does Clare Leighton in Four Hedges in referring to her gardener and their tools). Traditional skills and techniques are important and are things I enjoy reading about - I don't own wood working machines and prefer to work quietly with just a few hand tools.

Books

Books are important to me, I always have one or more on the go. In fact 2 of John Mortimer's 'Rumpole' books support my keyboard.

I am interested in Art & Art History (many, including but not limited to wood engraving), History (19th-mid 20th Century), biographies (I’m interested in what makes up other people), transport (various) and Antarctic Exploration esp. from early 1900s.

Music

Music has always been an important part of my life and I listen to Radio 3 for both classical and jazz music.

I was a chorister as a child / in my youth in a local church that also stood in for cathedral services when their choirs were on holiday - Southwell, Chester, Worcester, Peterborough & Leicester come to mind, then a lot of Bath & Bristol for RSM courses. It was quite an experience as an 8 year processing in to Southwell Minster and singing full choral evensong, then off to the provost (or similar) garden for tea. At University I sang in madrigal groups. From all this I have a particular interest in choral works, in particular early choral music.

I used to play Tenor/Soprano Sax player too, and was a member of various bands, including a Soul/Motown band that went around the region doing weddings, corporate events etc.

Cooking and Gardening

I do most of the cooking in our house, and enjoy it. I cook with the children, but as I'm not able to eat most of what they cook I often cook 'blind' in that I make but don't taste what it is like.

I enjoy gardening, mostly growing vegetables, which we do with success. We have spent a lot of time, money and energy developing our vegetable garden, and hope to continue to do so.

Being a Quiet Neighbour

I wish not to be a nuisance to those in our neighbourhood. All the activities outlined on this site are done quietly, with hand tools only - I don't own any large powered machines, and my press is as silent as can be - it is entirely mechanical with one manually operated screw thread.

But more importantly, this isn't something I'm doing all day - it is a few hours per week - so those around me won't even know when I'm doing it. The few deliveries I have are in the post or small parcels delivered when I'm at home, and currently no customers visit me.

There is also no dust, or chemical smells or any other type of annoyance, I hope. Further more as I have chronic rhinosinusitis I use a quiet dust extractor to remove dust from atmosphere and clean away saw dust continually as I work with a powerful Henry vacuum cleaner so my workspace is clean and tidy - there are no piles of flammable saw dust lying around.
